Curriculum
Here is a brief description of the curriculum covered in our developmental Kindergarten program during the course of the school year.
Calendar: Months of the year, days of the week and date of the week. Discussing weather and learning weather words.
Reading and Language Arts
At First Lutheran School, 1st grade students are instructed in the Open Court Reading Program, which adheres to the California State Standards or Reading and Language Arts requirements. This curriculum provides comprehensive instruction in the following areas:
Phonemic awareness, phonics, and word knowledge
Comprehension skills and strategies
Inquiry skills and strategies
Writing and language arts skills and strategies
Spelling and vocabulary
Grammar, usage and mechanics
Science/Social Studies: Core Knowledge
We are very excited to launch the Core Knowledge curriculum this year. The students will learn “the basics” of broad topics in order to set the foundation that will be built upon in later grades. This ensures that students get a richer knowledge of all state standards.

Astronomy Electricity Living Things and their Environments
Matter Measurement The Earth
Social Studies:
Early Exploration: Columbus, English Settlers and Conquistadors
Early People and Civilizations: Maya, Inca, and Aztec
The American Revolution
Symbols and Figures
Mesopotamia and Ancient Egypt
World Religion
Geography
Modern Civilization and culture: Mexico
Art projects will either be seasonal in content or relate directly to an area of the curriculum that we are studying.

2-digit Addition and Subtraction
Music: Instruments are use to teach basic music rhythms, tonality and pitches.
Rhythm & Movement/Physical Education: Through the use of songs and C D’s, exercises are planned that work on gross motor skills, especially jumping, galloping, skipping, running, and hopping.
Computer Literacy: Typing tutor, keyboard familiarization and educational computer games.
Bible stories: The stories are presented to the students with songs, poems and activities that correspond to each story weekly. A short memory verse is learned each week.
Parent - Teacher Communication
A newsletter is sent home highlighting the special events and explaining what lessons are being covered.

As a child, I had a positive learning experience and I attribute my love for teaching to the many dedicated teachers I had, many of which came from First Lutheran School. This has always motivated me to give my students a similar experience and to encourage an enthusiasm and love for learning.
I believe that every student deserves the opportunity to grow emotionally, spiritually and as a young scholar. William Butler Yeats, a poet, once wrote, “Education is not the filling of a pail, but the lighting of a fire.” I keep this quote in mind when designing my lessons.
Every child learns differently; it is my job to find out what each student needs in order to reach his or her full potential. No matter what type of learner we are it is important to have a number of outlets in which to show a growth in knowledge.
Children, as well as adults, need positive moral support in order to reach their goals and full knowledge potential. When a child knows that someone believes in their abilities, they are more likely to succeed. In saying this, I try my best to create a positive, welcoming learning environment. A kind demeanor and bright classroom with student work showing are two ways I create this environment.
I will contribute to the overall achievement of my students by paying attention to their learning needs in order to modify lessons so each student, whether they are advanced or in need of extra help, achieve. It is my responsibility to make sure that the subject matter is comprehensible to the students, to engage and support students in their learning, to assess and reteach, and to develop as a professional.
Teaching is a privileged position that requires time, care, respect, humility, professionalism, organization and responsibility. I take great pride in my profession and am confident that I have the qualities that are needed to run a successful, stimulating and nurturing classroom. I strive to be a life-long learner, as each new group of students brings new challenges and successes.
